5 Mistakes That Keep Experienced Professionals Invisible to Recruiters

cv & linkedin job search senior roles

If you have 10, 15 or 20 years of experience but your applications go quiet, it's natural to wonder whether the market has moved on without you.

Usually it hasn't. In our work with experienced professionals, the same five mistakes appear again and again, and every one of them can be fixed.

Mistake 1: A CV that describes duties instead of impact

"Responsible for managing the regional team" tells a recruiter what your job was. It doesn't tell them what you achieved.

Fix it: For every role, write 3–5 achievements with a result: money saved, time reduced, quality improved, people developed, projects delivered. Lead with the outcome, then the action.

Mistake 2: A LinkedIn headline that only shows your current title

Recruiters search LinkedIn by keywords and skills. If your headline only says "Senior Manager at Company X", you're hard to find for the roles you actually want.

Fix it: Write a headline that says what you do, for whom and at what level, using the words recruiters search for. Example: "Supply Chain Leader | Global Operations Transformation | Manufacturing & Engineering".

Mistake 3: Applying to everything

When you apply broadly, your applications become generic, and generic applications lose to tailored ones.

Fix it: Choose 2–3 target role titles and a list of companies. Tailor the top third of your CV and your first lines to each role's top requirements. Fewer, sharper applications win more interviews.

Mistake 4: Waiting for job postings

Many senior roles are filled through referrals and direct conversations before they're widely advertised. If you only apply online, you're invisible to a large part of the market.

Fix it: Each week, reach out personally to a handful of decision-makers and people inside your target companies. Ask for perspective, not a job. Relationships create opportunities that job boards never show.

Mistake 5: Underselling yourself in interviews

Many experienced professionals, especially those who value modesty, describe what "the team" did and leave out their own contribution. Interviewers can't hire what they can't see.

Fix it: Prepare five achievement stories using a simple structure: the situation, what you did, and the measurable result. Practise them out loud until they feel natural.

The common thread

None of these mistakes are about talent. They're about positioning and visibility. Fix them, and the same experience that was being overlooked starts to open doors.
